First-time hosting usually fails on small details, not on “weak general knowledge”: a background tab throttles the timer, the TV is muted, or guests do not know if phone search is allowed. This is a fifteen-minute list before the door, then the sentences you say once, then what you do between questions. It does not replace the full trivia-night guide; it is what you keep next to the charger.
Team count. Whether phones may search. Who touches the screen (you). What happens on a tie. Do not lecture every question type—one sentence when a type appears is enough. If the room is mixed-language, announce pack language. Disputes: fair play.
Families: four topics. Office: twenty to forty minutes is enough. After iftar, do not open with a dense order-list. Links: family, office, Ramadan.
Read the stem, wait half a second (a full second on a video call), watch the timer. Show scores after every question. Break about every eight items. Keep the tab in front. If ads appear after advertising-cookie consent, they sit on the open-question page—do not close the tab thinking it is a bug.
If the machine stalls, do not complain about the platform for a full minute in front of guests; refresh or move on if your rules allow. Common failures: devices and the FAQ.
Announce the order, thank the teams, save the name if you want a later round. Do not turn the board into a comparison of children or colleagues. Classrooms should sound like recap, not pass/fail: classroom tips.
Step-by-step UI: how to play. Account: sign up.
If you have never hosted, play two questions with one other person before guests. That catches a TV on the wrong input, UI language that is not question language, or not knowing where the session name is saved. Ten minutes here saves twenty minutes of confusion in public. If the group will play remotely, test share with a friend on a short call, not at the official start time.
Keep a paper next to the screen: phone rule, team count, session name. When a guest asks mid-round, do not invent a new ruling in your head—read the paper. That is simpler than memorizing a long list.
